How to Experience the NFR as a Newbie
Can you believe this was my first time in Vegas? The National Finals Rodeo (NFR) has been on my bucket list for ages, and I finally had the chance to experience it with my friend Harriet and her husband Steve. And let me tell you, 2 full days were definitely not enough! Thankfully, we've been invited back for next year, and I can't wait to share my newfound wisdom with you all.
First and foremost, the rodeo talent was absolutely mind-blowing. We were lucky enough to have front-row action, thanks to our host the director of the NFR! Watching the best of the best in action was truly awe-inspiring. But it wasn't just the rodeo itself that caught my attention. The orchestration and organization of the entire event were impeccable. Even the handling of the livestock, from horses to cattle and calves, was fascinating to learn about.
Now, let's talk about the nightlife. I'm usually an in-bed by 9pm girlie, but during my time at the NFR, I didn't hit the hay before 2am. Every night, there was an incredible concert. We were even lucky enough to snag last-minute tickets to Ian Munsick's show on the floor. It was so good!!
My NFR Highlights:
The people. Everywhere we went, we encountered kindness and generosity. From the rodeo’s old-timers to the rad businesswomen we met at Cowboy Christmas, everyone was simply happy to be there. Hearing their stories reminded me of the challenges and losses the rodeo community faces, but their resilience and spirit were truly inspiring. Even the local Uber drivers couldn't help but comment on how this event is their favorite people to give rides to.
Cowboy Christmas. This place blew my mind! I had the pleasure of meeting Mary from Five Mary's and getting a signed copy of her cookbook. I also discovered Kathleen, the drop-dead gorgeous 72-year-old owner of the Desert Bead Co., and Alicia from Hyer Boots, whose boots may be a bit out of my price range but dang, are they stunning!
My favorite rodeo event: Barrel Racing. Watching the incredible skills of these women, some of whom were over 50, was a true highlight. What amazed me even more was learning that many of them are not just dedicated athletes, but also mothers, nurses, and more.
The Rodeo Queens! I had the pleasure of chatting with two rodeo queens about their beauty routines, and let me tell you, their dedication is unparalleled. They even update their eyelashes throughout the course of the rodeo! But what struck me the most was their entourage-like presence, as they traveled with their families, who proudly wore buttons with their queen's face on them. It was a beautiful display of support and love.
The outfits. This crowd knows how to dress up! Everywhere I looked, there were stunning ensembles, and everyone was dressed to the nines. My fringe pants were a hit, but next year, I'll make sure to invest in some comfortable sneakers for Cowboy Christmas. (See more under “what I’ll do differently next year”.)
The Vegas food scene. Where do I even begin? Each day, we indulged in one major meal, and every restaurant we visited was a Vegas twist on its New York counterpart. Momofuku, Milk Bar, Bardot, and Javier's Cantina were my favorites!
The music. Every night, there was a concert that added an extra layer of magic to the NFR experience.
The humidor at Monte Cristo's at Caesars Palace. This hidden gem was a hub for the cowboys, where they gathered to watch the live stream of Texas Hold'em. It felt like being on the set of a cowboy version of James Bond. And yes, I even learned how to smoke a cigar for the first time!
The newly renovated Silverton Casino. Located off the strip, this tranquil getaway served as a much-needed respite after the hustle and bustle of each day, or should I say, early morning.
The Sphere. We went to the show, "Postcards from Earth," and while the plot may not have been my personal cup of tea, the cinematography and special effects were absolutely breathtaking in this new venue!
Looking ahead to next year's NFR, there are a few things I'll do differently…
Things I’d Do Differently:
Attend the Junior World Finals. This event is a must-see, and I can't wait to witness the incredible young talent.
Explore the horse sale and the team roping events at South Point. These events offer a unique glimpse into another aspect of the rodeo world, and I don't want to miss out.
Opt for sneakers at Cowboy Christmas. We walked an average of 9 miles a day, and my feet felt it! I’d go so far as to say the official footwear of choice at the NFR might have been Hoka sneakers! I’ll save my cowgirl boots for evenings at the rodeo and concerts instead…
Make all lunch and dinner reservations well in advance. There were a few restaurants I missed out on, including Carbone, my favorite Italian spot in NYC. So next year, I'll make sure to plan further ahead.
Add one extra day to the itinerary so we can feel less rushed, and have time to relax.
Seek out the line dancing. I couldn't find it, but next year, I'm determined to go!
Never have I ever gone to Las Vegas?! Wow. I am hugely surprised by how much I enjoyed it, and am already planning for NFR 2024! Will I see you there? I’d love to meet up with some of you Darlings!
