Lessons From My 2 Week Social Media Detox

There's something a bit strange about these quiet days after New Year's. It’s like a twilight zone where the holiday decorations are packed away, and yet we’re still not back to our regular days quite yet. The house feels both empty and full of opportunity. So far, I've spent the beginning of 2025 doing something that was long overdue – creating space. Physical space, mental space, emotional space.

After four years in my Bozeman home, I’m finally tackling my cabinets and closets that had become passive storage units for "someday" items. You know the ones – the gadgets you might use, the clothes you might fit into again, the gifts you felt too guilty to give away. It was time to create some space. As I’ve been sorting through the layers of accumulated life, I was reminded of a simple truth: our outer space reflects our inner state.

The word I chose for 2025 is "vibrant." Not just the surface-level vibrancy of bright colors and bold choices (though I did just get curtain bangs and bought myself a curling iron – adventures in hair styling at 59!), but the deeper vibrancy that comes from living at a higher frequency. I've learned that maintaining a higher vibration requires space – space to breathe, space to think, space to simply be.

I took a social media break over the holidays, and I have to admit it was refreshing. The end of the year can be overwhelming with everyone's highlight reels and "best of" moments. I watched my own kids struggle with the comparison trap over New Year's Eve, and it reminded me why these digital detoxes are so essential. We don't need to see everyone's carefully curated recaps to know our own year was meaningful.

Even the Christmas cards I received this year told an interesting story about how we present ourselves to the world. So many formal wedding photos and generic greetings, but where were the real updates, the authentic moments? I found myself yearning for more genuine updates. It made me think about how moving forward, I want to show up online, especially for women my age. Upon re-entering the online world this week, I searched for #vibrant on Instagram and noticed how few "regular" women in their 50s and 60s are sharing their stories. We're out here living rich, complex lives, and those stories deserve to be told. My aim this year is to embody playfulness and genuine fun, to laugh more, and exist in that higher vibration we've earned — and those are the kinds of daily posts that I want to share.

My social media detox opened space for me to sign up for the Gabby Bernstein Manifestation Challenge, which I also did in 2024. I’m committing to the challenge for the first 21 days of January, and I want to focus on creating disciplined practices for my work. Gabby's daily lessons are 5 minutes or less, so this commitment feels like a good starting point as we’re getting ready to launch the Dare Guides membership next month! (Eeek! I can't wait to share more about this.)

For those of you feeling overwhelmed by the new year energy, remember this: creating space – whether it's in your kitchen cabinets or your calendar – isn't about emptiness. It's about making room for what truly matters. I really believe this helps create the conditions for vibrancy to flourish.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m here for you and I want to hear what you want to get from me. What kind of content do you want to see more of? My goal for 2025 is to be a year of vibrancy and authenticity on social media!

Happy New Year.
