3 New Things I'm Trying
One thing I’ve learned on this journey is that trying new things can be so invigorating – even if they are “small”. They can awaken our curiosity and truly bring little moments of joy into our day-to-day. These seemingly minor changes can help us get unstuck from a bit of routine and as crazy as it sounds, they also help us build resilience as we learn to adapt and discover this new thing. When we embrace the unfamiliar, we open our hearts and minds, reminding ourselves that growth can come from the simplest shifts. Each new experience, no matter how small, is a step towards a more enriched life. I’d like to Dare us to sprinkle our days with a few more little Detours that spark delight this week.
Here are a few that I’ve been trying…
1. Woodblock Carving
I recently had the pleasure of trying woodblock carving with the talented Hilary Honadel. She’s an art major from MSU and now works with the Cactus Blossom Collective in Livingston – an art space where you’ll find a fantastic mix of local art and vintage treasures. Hilary and I met at her exhibition at Old Main Gallery in Bozeman years ago, and her passion for art was contagious. Under her guidance, I found the process of woodblock carving incredibly relaxing and fulfilling. (And you'll be pleased to know that every woman attending our upcoming Montana retreat will get to create a print, thanks to Hilary!)
2. Milking a Cow
Next week I’m going to try something I’ve never done before — milk a cow! Lorca Smetana, a local author and friend of mine, has promised to guide me through this experience with her beloved cow. I’m very excited to meet this special lady. Lorca even published a book, Cheek to Flank, which is a collection of short stories about her cow. She’ll be serenading us during the process since her voice is what gets her to let her milk down. Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing it on the ‘gram!
3. Making Iced Lattes at Home
I’ve hopped on the salted maple latte trend, and let me tell you – there’s no turning back! Here’s the original Instagram recipe, but I do a little bit more of everything (more maple syrup, more salt, more milk.) I’ve been crafting these in my kitchen without even needing an espresso machine. Instead of using the milk frother, I put all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker over ice, shake it up, and pour it into a glass. It’s SO good. So, so good.
I encourage all of you to take a tiny leap this week and try something new, no matter how small it may seem. Stepping out of your comfort zone can bring unexpected joy and yes, growth.
